Discrete Distributions

Slide the chance of success for one yes-or-no trial. The success and failure bars trade height as the mean and variance update alongside.

Bernoulli Distribution

Success Probability (p):0.50
0.000.501.00P(X=x)0 (Failure)1 (Success)x0.500.50

Properties

Support: X ∈ {0, 1}
P(X = 1) = p = 0.50
P(X = 0) = 1 - p = 0.50
E[X] = p = 0.50
Var(X) = p(1-p) = 0.250
  • A Bernoulli trial represents a single binary experiment — a coin flip, a click or no-click.
  • "Success" (1) is simply the category we encode as 1, which may well represent an undesirable event, such as finding a defect.
The Bernoulli Distribution is the foundation of discrete probability. It models a single trial with success probability p. Its expected value is simply p, and its variance reaches its maximum of 0.25 when p = 0.5.
